Interior Minister Lieutenant General Mohammad al-Shaar told, “The bomber blew himself up near a school in the historic Midan quarter.”
The government said, 63 people were also injured.
Activists said, Another 17 civilians were dashed dead on Friday in the daily restless.
The interior ministry branded the bombing “a new terrorist escalation” and said more than 10kg of explosives were used.
A ministry report said, “We will strike with an iron fist all those who undermine the security of the nation.”
Where Friday’s attack took place, the funerals were taking place in the working-class Midan neighbourhood in the Al Hassan mosque.
While thousands of government assistants assembled outside, many waving flags, Damascus mufti Bashir Eid advocated a funeral sermon in the presence of officials ordinary people and several ministers.
The crowd outside toned to President Bashar Al Assad, “With our souls and our blood we will sacrifice ourselves for you.”
The Muslim Brotherhood said, “We hold the regime, its agents and its gangs, fully responsible for this crime”. Which had also charged the government of directing twin suicide attacks on December 23 in Damascus.
The umbrella Syrian National Council said “clearly bears the regime’s fingerprints”.
The UN chief Ban Ki-moon said, “all violence is unacceptable and must stop immediately”. The United States sentenced the attack, again calling for Mr Assad to step down.
“Without doubt, the unity and vigilance of the Syrian government and people are disappointing the enemies of Syria who think only of internal war, breaking up the country and making it submit to the demands of the axis of America and Zionism”, Foreign ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said.
Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem al-Thani, who heads an Arab League task force on Syria, has admitted “mistakes” in the supervising mission.
