The earthquake with 5.7-magnitude killed 8 people in Turkey and dozens people trapped in the rubble. Rescue workers have pulled 23 survivors from the dust.
Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said Wednesday’s quake toppled 25 buildings in the city of Van, but only three of them were filled. The others had been emptied after the damage of last month’s powerful earthquake.
The earlier 7.2-magnitude earthquake hit on 23 October, which killed near about 600 people.
Rescue workers raced up their search for survivors by daylight yesterday, trying to open tunnels into the rubble, CNN Turk television reported. The workers used the glower of high-powered lights to work throughout the night.
Mr Atalay said the rescue work was concentrating at the site of two cracked hotels and one apartment building.
The cracked buildings was the Van’s best-known hotel, Bayram Hotel, both hotels was about 40 years old, and had been freshned up last year. Some of the guests were journalists there for the wake of the previous earthquake, which left thousands homeless.
Blankets, Tents and other supplies were sent from other countries to help. Turkey’s Dogan news agency said two of its reporters were missing.
Some foreign rescue workers who struggled to help the survivors of the previous quake were also staying at the same hotel.
The director of the Turkish Seismic Institution Dogan Kalafat, said that properly built, spoiled buildings would not be expected to cracked after a moderate earthquake like the one that came on Wednesday.
